I think the thread title is the issue.

Makes it look like a few dozen other threads here.

Go to the original post and edit it. Then edit the title to include something about black soot and exhaust pipe.

Also, read the other threads in this section about FmF settings. I think your 5th number is too low.

I believe excess soot is a sign of being too rich. Don't go to the bank on that. It's just something I recall reading in the past.

Can you take a picture and post it regarding what you're concerned about?

Some dark sooty stuff is not a bad thing. It is burnt exhaust after-all.

A picture might help. Plus a thread title change. Very happy

Quote :
1) Rich Mixture means the carburetor is delivering too much gasoline. Typical symptoms of a rich mixture are:

Poor fuel economy

Sluggish acceleration

Choke not needed from cold starts

Sooty or black spark plugs

Sooty or black muffler end pipes

Strong smell of gasoline when machine is at idle

Uneven running (will often slow from regular idle rpm's and stop)

------------------------------------------------------------------

2) Lean Mixtures means the carburetor is delivering too much air. Typical symptoms of a lean mixture are:

Backfires as the throttle is closed (primarily during coast-downs)

Lurching acceleration

White or light grey spark plugs

Requires excessive amounts of choke to run/start

White or light grey muffler end pipes

Bluing (on chrome systems) of the exhaust header down-pipes

So we don't have carb's, but the results should be the same.

Thanks for the reply motokid. I too think its from running to rich. I dont know much about that 5th setting your talking about, but from reading around it seems like i havnt opened my airbox up as much as most people have so i'll lower my first two numbers to G - 1.5 and Y - 2.0 and go from there. When my wrist fracture heals in a couple weeks i'll be able to take her out and try out these settings. And Possibly lower them from there.

If anyone has any more suggestions it would be greatly appreciated!

These numbers don't suggest that you're too rich, but what do I know? I don't have an FmF.

The 5th number is discussed some here. <-- CLICKY

so maybe i've got to increase my #5 setting a bit higher to smooth out the accleration and thus doesnt add to much fuel that wont become fully burnt? at least thats what it sounds like to me.

If you have a stretch of strictly road/asphalt riding coming up, try removing the airbox door completely.

No way you'd be too rich without airbox door.

I'd still try to get a picture posted of how much soot you're talking about.

Exhaust is dirty stuff. Some soot is reasonable.

Also - you have packing in your muffler that deteriorates over time. I assume some of that packing gets blown out over time as it breaks down.

How old is your FmF muffler? If it's more than a year or two old have you repacked it yet?
When you thoroughly clean the exhaust tip how long does it take for the soot to appear again?

A few here have called

Dobeck Industries

regarding their FmF settings and talked to technical people about specific settings.

You can always give that a try.
