popping sound normal?

My stock 2009x seems to be popping/backfiring a little more than it used to. I don't really know much about bikes and it could be all in my head but should I be worried? I bought the bike with 3000 miles on and I've done about 300 miles on it so far. oils all fine and the bike is in really good condition. This normal? cheers.

My bike is stock and it never pops at all.

Depends, mine used to pop and make noises when decelerating/downshifting real aggressively. The backfire itself is not harmful.

There is an emissions component involved known as the air injection system (AIS) it is designed to introduce fresh air into the exhaust stream when the throttle is shut, the fresh air allows unburnt fuel/hydrocarbons to burn off resulting in a backfire. This component is usually removed when a fuel programer is installed to prevent increased backfires from the extra fuel.

If your CO settings or riding style have been altered lately, that could explain why it is happening "more often". Please do a search if you are unfamiliar with the "CO adjustment", this setting essentially adds or subtracts fuel at closed throttle and could contribute to your perceived condition.

Are you sure your bike is 100% stock? Nothing removed and nothing added anywhere by previous owner?

Check to see if the AIS system is there. A little chrome tube that connects to cylinder head right near exhaust pipe connection.

If you have a stock exhaust you want the AIS system to be there.

Nothing under the seat? No little fuel programmer or module installed that you can't see without removing seat and maybe a shroud or panel?

Is your airbox door still there? No after-market air filter like a K&N filter?
