| Winter is near upon me and its time for the upgrade list to be written. First order of business is a new pipe. I made the mistake of riding a Beta 480RR during a local demo day that i was also the photographer for (pics here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153654415645993.1073741877.711915992&type=1&l=58a80c7614), and the deeeeep bass rumble of the 480 was amazing. From my online listening to the sounds of exhausts on WR's it SEEMS like the RS-4 has one of the better sounds to my ears. I find the existing pipe quiet and pleasant in the metros but on the trails i want a bit more thumping bass.
Any issues/gripes/etc w the rs-4? does it actually weigh more than the OEM pipe? any method for protecting touring gear from being burnt on it? I have a Giant Loop U shaped bag that would not fair to well to direct contact if/when i do overnighters.
the look of the Yoshimura pipe to me is the best of the available pipes, sound seems good (hopefully not too much louder than stock), and price for a standard stainless steel slip on is not off the charts.
All input welcome.
Cheers, Don | |

| My wr had a rs-4 on it when i bought it, It was loud... very loud. I would coast past cops to keep the bike as quiet as possible.
I finally was forced to replace it with a fmf rated at 96db for dual sport rides where they sound check
this post reminded me i need to list that rs-4 on ebay
the fmf sounds just as nice, i prefer it over the rs-4

| Why would you not offer it here on the forum to our members first and then if nobody wanted it here sell on ebay? | |

| I'm *pretty sure* mine came with an RS-4 and I find it to be pretty loud, too. A previous owner must have dropped it once or twice because it's got some cosmetic damage and probably has little resale value. While not #1 on my list of things to do, I am looking around for something quieter. I like the sound at idle, but it doesn't take much to get to where I find it to be too loud. | |

| ToddDubya if you decide you want to get rid of your RS-4 I'd be happy to take it off your hands | |

| Not at the moment, but if I do I'll put it up for sale here. Right now it's in the "ain't broke, ain't fixin' it" category. :) | |

| Ah yes, I'm familiar with that category. Better than the "its broke, gotta fix it" category | |

| Although the Yoshimoto site implies there's no quiet insert (I really dislike their site), I found one on Motosport.com for something like $26. They say it fits the RS-4 that goes on a 2008 WR-X and I'm willing to gamble. I ordered the overpriced Yoshi repacking kit at the same time. I'm sure that's never been done on mine and it got me free shipping. My fingers are crossed that the combination of the two will help quiet my exhaust down to a less unreasonable level.
While I have the exhaust apart I'm gonna spend a few minutes banging out the dents, too. Maybe that'll work, maybe not.
I'll report back once I get all that squared away.

| Well the quiet insert is clearly not for my model exhaust. It's basically a steel tube with an end cap that doesn't fit the exhaust. Before I modified it to fit better I jury rigged it in there to see if it makes any difference at all and according to my iPhone app it's 5 dB louder at idle. According to my ear, it's at best the same loudness, if not worse. I'm gonna have to contact the place I bought it about returning it.
Tomorrow I'm going to repack the Fiberglas and see what that does for me, but I'm not holding my breath. This is looking like a chunk of money down the drain.
All I want is to be able to ride a few miles around town without needing earplugs. I've got my eyes on a dealer take-off factory exhaust but I don't really want to dick around with the exup nonsense.

| Get a DB dawg for your Yoshi pipe.
They come a few different sizes, measure the inside of the pipe at the end where it goes and order the one that fits.
I put one in a super loud white brothers pipe on my race atv years ago, it made it quiet, they fit in any pipe with a round hole at the end.

| Thanks, I'll check them out.
ETA: Hmm, they seem to get mixed reviews. At this point I'm throwing good money after bad to make my exhaust into something it isn't. Between the insert that I likely can't return anymore, the repacking kit, the heavy duty riveter I needed to reinstall the tail piece I'm another $100+ into an exhaust I'll probably just replace.
I'm leaning toward the Q4 with the Megabomb header.
