Hi all,

Where did you buy your racetech gold valves from?
Do they advise you on what valves to get? Or is it just a valve kit and your weight and stuff have to relevance?

Thanks!

You can buy them directly from Race Tech.  The gold valve kits come with instructions for installation and recommendation for selecting the right shim combination for your weight and riding style etc.  You can review the instructions via the "support" link on their web page.

Be aware that there are separate kits (and part numbers) for fork compression and rebound valve kits.

I bought mine from my local Race Tech shop but the itemized part numbers and prices were the same as shown on the Race Tech web site.

The information on Racetech's website seems clear and unambiguous to me: Gold Valve kit for forks is FMGV 2020C (C&R), and SMGV 4633 for shock.

I did install SMGV 4633 in my shock and it works brilliantly; the stock fork valving is fine for me.

Hey John,

Thank you very much for your reply !

I tried again on the racetech website - found my mistake - entered 2009 as manufacturing year yesterday- as it is a 2009 modell - tried 2010 today as the bikes should be the same - shows me the FMGV 2020C now too ....

Thx again - i was confused because until that moment every google search told me that the FMGV 2040 is fitting the WR250R... and that the FMGV 2020C is for a suzuki ....

There is definitely something going on with Racetech's website: when I look for a 2008 WRR it links to a "special valving" document that uses FMGV 2040. Amazon has them, but it says it does not fit the 2008 WRR. If you search eBay, you find that FMGV 2040 fits a huge list of bikes, including the WRR of all years; on the other hand, no one seems to carry FMGV 2020C.

Another twist is that FMGV 2040 appears to have just compression valving, and rebound valving is a different kit, FRGV 200602.

Considering the above, I think it makes more sense to send an email to Racetech and ask them about the fork valving discrepancy between the WRR model years given that the WRR did not change at all throughout its run.

That's bad, maybe they don't care about a bike that has not been in production for a couple of years now?

It seems that a call is your only option at this point, but finding someone there that knows what's going on will be a challenge; they'll probably ask you to send them an email!

You said you were in Germany, right? You're 9 hours ahead of California, so you need to call Racetech after 6pm your time (9am CA time), not early morning.

As predicted, the Racetech guy you talked to simply read off the charts they have, without knowing why the charts are the way they are.

It's not that difficult to see for yourself that the fork internals have not changed: just go to Service Honda and compare the P/Ns for the 2009 fork, and the P/Ns for the 2010 fork; they're the same (you may notice that the P/N for the entire fork is slightly different; this is due to the different anodizing colour between the two years; the internals are the same).

There are people who have successfully installed FMGV 2040, but I have not seen anyone having installed FMGV 2020C, so if it was me I would go for the FMGV 2040.

Having said that, FMGV 2040 is just a compression valve, so unless you're bottoming out the forks with the OEM compression set to max, then you don't need FMGV 2040.

Hello Again :)

.... got the gold valve long ago but did not find the time to actually install it - started with one side of the fork yesterday - to be able to get back to an assembled one just in case i forget something :) -
went well afterall - rebound valve fits - the only pitty is that I am missing some shims i need to build the valve stack as stated in my  dvs custom setup :( - ordered online - will arrive this week - i´ll finish next weekend hopefully and then i´ll post some oictures as soon as i found out how this works :) .... if anybody want´s to have something measured or pictures - from an internal part from the forks - this will be a good time to raise yout hand :)

Happened to me too, the gold valve package for the shock was missing some shims; sent an email to RaceTech and they sent me the necessary shims.

Good luck with the rest of the installation.

alright - finished with the installation - it was my first time working on a front fork - only thing i did before was changing oil and springs there - but building the holder tools and opening it all up, building stacks and installing the compression / rebound valve was quite exciting :)

1) the FMGV 2020C Kit - both, rebound and compression valve fit the WR 2009 model - racetech homepage will not bring this up until you choose the 2010 modell - good to know

2) regarding the good reputation the customer service has according to various threads on various forums - i must have reached out to the guys on a bad day - talked to them on the phone and also email regarding some newbie questions on stack building - feedback was ok - but pretty rudimentary - discovered that the shims were not complete in the set they send me - suddenly no reply after i told them about it - got back to them after more than a week (had bought shims already by myself by the time because i needed the bike at least moving in the garage) - the would still not believe me but offered to send the missing shims for free - i would just have to pay to shipping ..... to Germany .... LOL

3) can´t say nothing about the riding so far as i only rode the bike in the backyard till now to check if the suspension is working at all - still need to check sag front and rear and adjust - and of course take it for a spin in the dirt ..... but first feeling riding around the front feels stiffer (all valves completely open - softest setup)

4) replaced each and every small part /sealing in the forks  as i took it apart anyway - and also mounted belows - just to give it a try and see if it increases the lifetime and reliability of the sealings - as I will use the WR for RTW trip in 2026 also quite important for me....

will try to talk about my impressions after adjusting and test riding later....

That's a well known bias of RaceTech: they tend to specify valving for aggressive riding, so when you order the valving configuration from them you need to request one or two levels lower than you would normally do.

What kind of fork oil did you use? Ideally it should be very light weight (close to 0W), and let the valving do the damping.

Hi John, good to know, thanks for the info... for the valving I picked novice rider, standard stiffnes and oversize fuel tank as I have the big ims mounted.... I put in motorex 5W ... which is then maybe to thick.... or maybe I have to go back to the original springs now as I have installed the progressive springs from hyperpro.... or is the bellows ....

I'm not a fan of progressive springs mainly because setting sag is essentially impossible with them, but the harshness is not coming from the springs, it's coming from the hydraulics.

See how the forks feel after a few rides, and then you can decide whether to go to a lighter fork oil.

Did you change the fork seals? I highly recommend the SKF ones, they completely eliminate stiction so they make the fork operation very smooth, and they last a really long time.

Yes changed the seals... I don't remember the brand... have to check... tested the hyperpro springs to reduce risk of bottoming out.... don't need that anymore probably with the new valving...

The SKF seals are easily identifiable by their green colour.

Nope...has not been skf, I went with all balls.... but I ordered skf now and 2.5W oil..... will go to this combo + OEM spring if the fork will stay that stiff
