WR250R Tires... Empty
PostSubject: WR250R Tires...   WR250R Tires... EmptyTue Mar 10, 2009 10:49 am

I have had great luck with the Dunlop 606 tires but have not tried them on my R2. Question is the stock front tire is a 80/100x21 and the 606 closest size is 90/90x21...witll this work?

Rear is a similar situation with stock being 120/80x18 and the 606 closes size is a 120/90x18...approximately the same diameter?

Does anyone have experience on the nuances of slight tire size changes? What am I up against here?

TIA

I'm running the same setup with NO problem. You won't notice any change in the bike, only that they kick butt on the TW's. thumb

I want to get those as my next tire, but i'm afraid of burning through them faster then the stock ones on the asphalt.

A friend of mine has them on his DR and they are holding up really well. They have a slightly harder compound so they don't wear as fast.

i am on my second set of 606s and they feel like they were made for the bike. 90/90-21 front and 120/90-18 on the rear, here is some pics of them at 2145 starting to go quick at this point. i ride like 60% street and 40% dirt, need more dirt!

Seems like every time I go out I lower them down a little more. I'm down to 25/19 I think. Of course I am pushing 220lbs with everythin in the sack and all the gear.

*the question is should I air down more when I get to the trails and then air back up for the ride home, or just screw it and stay there?

Has anyone tried the Mefos in appropriate sizes? They are getting really good reviews on wear and effectiveness. I want totry a set myself. I have used lots of TKCs and 606s with pretty good results as well.

I use Michelin Cross AC-10s, size 80/100-21 in front and 100/100-18 in the rear, though I'm told the 110/100-18 will fit. I love these tires. They wear fairly well on the pavement, with decent traction, and work extremely well in the dirt.

Anything else is just meh deal

I run the same thing. I think they're great off-road in just about anything. I also believe the 100/100 is a prefect size for this bike. Similar size to stock but, a lot lighter. Bigger, heavier tires don't do anything good for this bike. They will just bog you down.

Exactly. They are 1 pound lighter per tire, which is unsprung weight.

i'm using Pirelli's MT21. awesome tire on and off road. the rear looks like it will wear down pretty quick though. i hear the Kenda K270 (i think) is a possible choice for a longer lasting rear. i can think of no reason not to use the MT21's except what i already said about the rear.

What size MT21's did you go with? I just ordered a 90/90-21 and a 120/80-18. The front tire will be a bit wider than stock but everything else is the same. Any thoughts on the sizes (not the model) before I have them mounted? Any real worries about the wider front tire off-road (where it'll spend most of it's time)?

i went with the 120/80-18 rear and 80/90-21 front. great tires on and off road. the rear does wear quickly though. they do not raise the ride height or are as heavy as the 606's. the 606's are harder so the will last a wee bit longer in the rear. the front looks great.

I just mounted my D606's front and rear. Seems I picked up a little wheel hop at around 45mph. Guess I need to balance them.

I'm also looking around for some pretty much dedicated on-road tires from some longer trips and and some more adventurous on-road cornering.

i have 606 on the rear stock up front. huge improvement from both stock. I just ordered a new set today. i was surprised i got 5000 miles out of the stock front, about 3000 out of the rear. the 606 seems to be halfway at 2000. mostly road miles

So you went with a shorter front tire than stock. I wish the MT21 was still available in 80/100-21 (51P). I've opted to go a bit wider and retain the stock height by using a 90/90-21. We'll see how it goes.

i tried to keep the tires as close to the stock size as possible. i might fiddle around with it some. i thought about trying a wider rear, but now i'm thinking skinnier might be better.

also note that 2 different tires of the same size are not always the same. usually the width is pretty close but the height can vary. like i said the 606's are bigger than the MT21's of the same size. this is true in road tires too so its not just the knobbies doing it.

PostSubject: MT21's   WR250R Tires... EmptyTue Mar 31, 2009 4:09 pm

I sent an email to Pirelli inquiring what had happened to the MT21 80/100-21 tire. I was informed that they stopped selling them 3 years ago due to lack of sales. The rep also suggested that the 80/90-21 was ideal for bikes under 175cc and that the 90/90-21 would be the choice for anything bigger. My tires are being mounted as I type.

I will say that I was fairly impressed with the stock Deathwings on large wet rocks and dirt when I ran them last Sunday though I took it really easy on the slimy mud sections.

Ok ready to order some tires this week. Didn't want to start another tire thread so am using this one. Pretty sure I want the 606's. Haven't looked around yet.

Questions. What size do i want? (obviously as close to stock)
Are these primo tires? Meaning would I be happier spending less money on something a little different?

*so far the stock tires have been fine for me. Wore quicker then i wanted, 50/50 street/dirt, but they where fine otherwise.

**lastly if you are going to suggest something else, I link would be awesome. I was just going to order from southwestmoto. They have always treated me good.

I've still got the 606's on mine and hardly any wear at 2000 km. I love the feel of them on the pavement and don't notice any squirminess at high speeds; also I don't have any loud howl associated with knobby tires like I thought I would. Off road, I am more than happy with them. They grip mud like no tomorrow, have been in the snow with them and again, they grip it pretty well as long as you don't get into any ugly ruts, but then pretty much any tire is gonna throw you in that crap. For a DOT tire, I find they are about as good as you could ask for before going strictly dirt tread. When these wear out, I'll be getting them again. thumb

Thanks shewolf. I just read a bunch of reviews on them and also a friend found a place selling them pretty cheap. I think I am sold. All I need to know is the exact size on both so I don't order the wrong ones. lol
