If there's a lesson in this story - the main lesson - when you go out by yourself, always assume something evil will have you spending the night.
Many people go from having an annoying and embarrassing night in the woods to being in real trouble because they keep pushing it, well after dark, because they can't let go of the hope they won't have to spend the night in the boonies. Set up a sensible camp while you still have light and as soon as it is obvious you're likely to be spending the night.
Amazing how many people don't have basic overnight supplies, and even more amazing is those who have a small kit but haven't actually tried to make it work in their back yard, where they can always go in and warm up and sleep if things don't work out as figured. Trying to get it to work as advertised or as you read in the dark, while possibly cold and wet, is a piss poor strategy.
