Oil Drain Plug Empty
PostSubject: Oil Drain Plug   Oil Drain Plug EmptyWed Apr 06, 2011 11:02 pm

Finally did an oil change at 1000kms. PO had totally over-tightened the drain plug, so I had to crank on it to get it off. The aluminum took a beating and I ended up having to use vice-grips to get it loose. Need to get a replacement drain bolt. Looking at the Yamaha parts diagram, I can't tell for sure what the part is. I think it's 90340-12006 and is called "Plug, straight screw". Can anyone confirm that? Or any suggestions for where to pick up an aftermarket magnetic drain plug?

Thanks.

Yes, that's the correct part name & number.

Here is a magnetic drain plug on Ebay, but it's a bit pricey. I'm pretty sure that Wheeling Cycle and Rocky Mountain Atv/Mc should have something similar......

Bought my magnetic replacement from Wheeling. Nice touch is it comes drilled for safety wiring for the paranoid among us. Works for me.

Definitely provides a potential indicator of something more serious from getting too far "South" if you catch it in time. ...not to mention the added safety factor.

A magnetic drain plug has saved our race motors several times.

I just did the same and really wrenched the $#it out of the drain plug. But figured out its a
M12 x 1.50 pitch x 20mm (length).

Can you confirm whether 20mm is the total length of the screw or just the thread?

I just got this one using the motorbike selector on their web site:
http://www.magneticdrainplug.com/Motorcycle_Drain_Plugs/MP01.html#.UnEOJflc3DU

...and the thread is roughly 20mm so not sure if I have the right size. There are plenty of plugs on ebay which look like they have thread half the length of the one I got and they are all sold for WR250. Confusing.

Thanks a lot!

I don't know why you would buy a non-standard plug (unless to go to a magnetic one). The OEM Oil Drain Plug 90340-12006-00 costs $2.68 at Service Honda

Don't forget the gasket for the oil drain plug 90430-12213-00 ($1.70)

I like the idea of magnetic drain plugs, but I have read reports of the magnet coming unglued and worry it could do more harm than good.

You could magnetize the one you have.
