| Back home in italy now for easter. In my area there have been some flooding so the government is trying to get as much money as they can to fix the place. How to get money if you got none? Raise the fuel tax in the region. Ready for this?
I now pay 1.998 Euro per liter! That is 2.64 Dollars per liter with the current exchange rate or 7.58 USD per US Gallon!
Crazy right?
Hopefully they rebuild the area soon enough so that prices can go back to "normal" levels...

| Paid as high as $1.59/L in Yukon, so what... $6.50lgal? Paid the same in death valley. Looking at high $4's here in Alaska. Back home in md? Right around $4/gal when I left. All for premium if available. Yukon gas was regular. | |

| $4.24 9/10 last night for 93 octane. At what point do you/might you start buying lower octane (CHEAPER) gas because you just hate paying for premium???? _________________ 2008 WR250X Gearing: 13t - 48t Power Commander 5 / PC-V Airbox Door Removed - Flapper glued - AIS removed FmF Q4 Bridgestone Battlax BT-003rs

| I was shocked when I got to the pump this morning. Regular was up over $4/gal, I think the highest I have ever seen it. I paid $4.399 for 93 octane, 1.46 gal. If I went with the cheap stuff it would have only saved like $0.50, so I am going to stick with the premium to lessen the risk of detonation and engine damage... Now if I was filling up my car or mini-van, it is a much bigger difference over 20 gallons. | |

I've put 87 and 89 octane in my X in the past - and noticed no difference in performance, response, or how the engine operates at all. I don't make a habit of it, but I'm not scared to do it when money is tight. _________________ 2008 WR250X Gearing: 13t - 48t Power Commander 5 / PC-V Airbox Door Removed - Flapper glued - AIS removed FmF Q4 Bridgestone Battlax BT-003rs

| $4.29 this morning for 92. Took 2.44gl (IMS tank). I noticed on my bike if I run anything less than 92 it pings under a load, like climbing hills. Not sure why because others with WRR's say they don't have that issue. But mine does. | |

| Using lower octane is fine, until you are really taxing the engine under high heat/high compression. If you are putting around, it probably won't hurt anything. But when the engine temp gets high, and you are stressing the engine, the fuel can ignite from the pressures rather than the spark, at the wrong time, and cause damage to your valves and generally mess things up. I don't think the compression ratio on this bike is THAT high, my CRF250r has a 13:1 ratio and it will run on 93 octane just fine. It might be Yamaha covering their butts to recommend the higher octane.
Since the bike has such a small tank, and the difference in a fill up is only $0.50, and I like to do a little more than put around when I can, I would rather not take the chance. But on the other hand, since the pumps I use typically have one hose for all three grades, how much 87 is left in the hose from the last guy before you even get any of the 93 out of the pump?

That's my belief too. One sticker fits all countries and grades of fuel. Since the engine is water cooled, and has a fan, I also think the heat issue is much less for paved road conditions as opposed to slower single track off-road conditions where air-flow through radiators is limited to almost zilch. _________________ 2008 WR250X Gearing: 13t - 48t Power Commander 5 / PC-V Airbox Door Removed - Flapper glued - AIS removed FmF Q4 Bridgestone Battlax BT-003rs

| Okay, did some research: From the Wall Street Journal (somewhat credible source): - Quote :
- According to the American Petroleum Institute the gas-pump hose typically retains about one third of a gallon of fuel. So when you pump a couple gallons of 93-octane premium after the previous customer pumped 87-octane regular, your fuel load would be diluted (not to mention overpriced).
So who knows. Maybe I am overpaying for the "93" octane at the pump, but I still get about a gallon of 93 to the 1/3 gallon of 87 from the last guy. And it is still cheaper than driving my car!! My last bike was air cooled, and recommended higher octane because it ran hotter. I agree the water cooled bike (and autumn temperatures) will likely negate the need for premium. Also, interesting fact, you should get better gas mileage out of the 87... For now I will probably continue to pay for the premium...
