10,000 miles on stock Yamaha Chain Slider

A good thing I changed this.

I have been checking it occasionally over the last few thousand miles.

I never removed from bike until today.

Getting new one on has my mind at ease.

If you've got 5000-7000 miles on your X or R you sure might want to check your chain slider.

Good advice. I almost bought that one just to have as spare because this is always in the back of mind after reading all the threads about it haha.

Thanks for posting side by side pics! I will be doing a more "thorough" inspection this weekend ( bout to hit 13k) when i change oil and lube up the chain. How do you like the case saver and cover?

The Freedom Case Saver parts are spot-on wonderful.

I've been living dangerously for a few thousand miles. I took the stock cover off and never put it back on.

It's good piece of mind to have that case saver on there. The sprocket cover is little more than bling I suppose, but it is nice to have there.

When i saw Emoose's post i decided to remove the cover and decided i'd just leave it off. Guess it will make it easier to check the chain slider! 98% of the time i have my Sidi's on but my luck now i'll do a quick run to the store and will get some shoe laces ripped off....or worse! Lol

Never once did I ever have a lace get caught in anything.

That countershaft sprocket sits back in there pretty far.

I was way more worried about a pebble or something getting caught between the chain and the case.

yep - looks good.

I think the obvious tell-tale is that "lobe" on the bottom closest to the countershaft.
If it's still there - you're probably alright, but it might still be worth a better look at some point if you've crossed that 10,000 mile mark.


The slider is captured by one bolt. I did remove the side stand bolts (2 of them) and swing that out of the way.
It's a 15 minute exercise that might give you better piece of mind or save you some real heart-ache.

Motokid: What front sprocket you have on your bike? You stay with stock 13 or go down to the 12T?

I only have about 2300 miles on my bike and the lower lobe on mine is already getting eaten into..and I run loose tension/slack and maintain the chain pretty well.

Lastly, How easy is it to take off?? can it be wiggled out without taking off anything else??

I only had a 12t front on for maybe 1000 miles or so way back.
I have a 13t front on now, and have had it on for most of the 10,000 miles.

There is really only one screw holding the slider in place. On the top of the swingarm back closest to the rear sprocket there's a slot in the slider that accepts a tab on the swingarm.


You can get the slider off with some effort by just removing that one screw, but removing the kickstand makes things a lot easier.

I just removed the two kickstand bolts and rotated the kickstand up out of the way. It was still connected to the sidestand safety switch.

For putting a new slider on I'd say that removing the sidestand was a must-do.

So three bolts, maybe 15 minutes tops to remove and put back in place.

I do have a swingarm stand for holding the bike up vertical.

Heres what 12,000 miles looks like.

Ouch....bet you have gouges in your swingarm don't you?
