Temporary refusal to start? Empty
PostSubject: Temporary refusal to start?   Temporary refusal to start? EmptySun Aug 19, 2012 10:28 pm

I had an incident where the fuel was low (but stil at or near the top of the pump) and the bike was leaning to the left on the side stand (a little more than normal because of road curvature) and the bike woldn't start. It would ALMOST start (firing occasionall) but when you released the start button it would quit firing and die. It did this about 10 times to where the battery was getting low.

One of my buddies thought maybe more fuel would help but before we tired that we just straightened the bike up and VOILA it fired right up (and the fuel light wasn't even on)?

So I have no good explanation???

Could it be your fuel pump? Symptoms match what others have reported. 2008 is the most-affected year.

That is certainly a possiblity - BUT I have already replaced the fuel pump back in 2010?

Beyond straightening up the bike, did you do anything else like move the handlebars or raise the side stand? I almost always move the handlebars when I straighted up my bikes. Habit.

Nope - just straightened it up and pushed the start button again.

i have a 2010 x and the pump went out on it only had 4500miles on it. anyway before it went out for about a month every once and awhile i would have long crank/no start issue the first few times i tried to start it. it did not happen often only 4 or five time in a month. that being said it left me stranded 45 miles from home so just a heads up of my experience with the whole fuel pump craping out. since i replaced the pump no issue so far. i know the 2008 had pump issues and they have been "fixed" since but i know from my experience working at a yamaha dealership ive seen more than one replaced on later models also. might be something to think about.
