PostSubject: Frogzskin Airbox Mod   Frogzskin Airbox Mod EmptyTue Jul 02, 2013 8:39 pm

I have been racing snowmobiles for years and I use these things on all of my sleds. I picked up the WRx a little over a month ago and starting doing the usual mods. I wasn't satisfied with the current mods to the airbox and wanted a dustproof, leakproof solution. I looked up a variety of odd sized items for their site and settled on the triangle and 1" round holes.

The final product

The products...

I used the pattern from the triangle and placed it where I wanted it. Its sticky so it stays in place on its own. I heated up a utility knife and cut out the shape.

Here's the Frogzskin stuck onto the airbox door.

I then taped a second sticky pattern sticky side out....

I reinstalled the side cover to get the pattern to stick to the inside of the foam.....and presto it stuck

I then cut out the side cover with a hot knife and stuck another frogzskin on the outside. Heres the finished product with a light put inside the airbox to illustrate the effect these little things have.

Heres the finish product on the bike.

These products are super sticky and work great.

Products can be ordered right from the site. www.frogzskin.com

Great product! I just swap my door in and out for road and offroad duty with my X, but using one on the sidecover should definitely increase airflow thumb

Same here. All I see are icons where pictures should be. scratch

I take it a "frogskin" is a breathable, yet water-proof patch of material with an adhesive boarder that you can cover a hole with.

Is that about right?

I do. Two of the original pictures worked too, but that was it.

I've been debating adding some ventilation to my side panel. I just don't know if it would make any difference over completely removing the airbox door. The only way to know is to permanently modify it so I'm hesitant.

An engine only draws in so many cfm's. So there's a point when there won't make any difference whatsoever. I feel better knowing nothing gets in my airbox other then air. That's why i opted to go with the frogzskin. I bought extra 1" round ones for that reason. I think the door should stay or keep cleaning the filter after every ride on dirt.

Exactly. The question remains though; how do we know when we've removed all the restrictions?

For anyone with the autotune it should be easy. Start with the most restrictive air box and make a map for that. Then start making holes or removing components and ride the bike. The autotune will suggest trims for the new mods. Come back make more holes and ride again....there's going to be a point when the autotune will not adjust anymore because there's enough air getting thru for the engine.
The frogzskins are easy for this because I can cover what I cut out and not worry about dirt or water.
Another company who sells the same type of fabric is Startling Line Products (SLP). It comes in sheets and is not sticky. You can make any shape this way like removing the door and covering the opening with a sheet of this stuff. Here's the link... Startling line products

ive always been kinda interested in the airbox mods where you remove a lot of the excess ducting (for lack of better term) from the top, but i was always a little leery of having that gigantic gaping hole up there... if you could cover it with something like this, I wonder how effective it would still be. all i have done so far is remove the vacuum hose from the airbox flapper so it stays open, but i would like to open it up a little more. I just dont like doing irreversible mods to something like that, just in case it doesnt have a desirable effect and i want to go back a step

A sheet of the SLP fabric would be best for you. You can remove the door and zip tie and piece of this around the opening. Pop the door back on if your not satisfied. The other issue you will encounter is running lean.
Here's where the autotune helps. I also have the LCD screen from dynojet and I can view instant AFR readings. So when I do a mod like this I can see it working. For example, when I first did the triangular frogzskin my AFR went from 13 to 14 with the autotune running. In that particular rpm/ throttle position the AFR table was set at 13 but the extra air caused a lean condition. When I got back home I plugged in the laptop and in that rpm/throttle position range the autotune suggested I add fuel. Accept trims and send map I went back on the road and in that same rpm/ throttle position AFR was now showing 13. This proves that opening up a little more then the flapper adds more air to the engine.....it's not much good to do these mods if fuel can't be adjusted to compensate for added air.

a few days after i got the bike home i was going over everything and found an fmf fuel programmer strapped in front of the battery, so I can richen it up a bit if i need to. Also, going to try a graves hi flow insert in the exhaust to open up that end as well.
