Because you are snowed under in the USA at present, I thought seeing some of our local trail rides around Wellington, New Zealand might cheer you up. My riding buddy Marks writes great ride reports on Maungakotukutuku Diary in Advrider, so here are some links -

Cheers, here is last weekend's ride. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=12218338&postcount=657 An awkward moment when the lead bike's handlebars clipped a tree & bounced to a stop. Unfortunately I clipped the same tree, bouncing into the back of his KLR & getting wedged under his tailrack. But Mr Yamahas engineering was good as the headlight surround popped off the mudguard & the numberplate off the the surround. No damage done & it all clipped together again

Last year a group of us headed north for 4 days/1400 km to ride some tracks around Taumarunui. My WRR was geared 13/45 & cruised at the open road speed limit - 100km but struggled into the strong headwinds. But it was so much fun offroad & the Safari tank got us 290km between fills. I was getting saddlesore at the end of the day so now I stand a lot more while riding and I have a sheepskin seatcover I met Broc Em (Bruce) on his WRR at Whangamomona too.

50km from home is the Akatarawa Forest , a 15,000 hectare "trailbike legal playground" I rode with Mark who has a Yamaha DT230, a 2 stroke dual purpose, that is a similar concept to the WRR. We had a great day, going somewhere slowly - just 45km in 4 hours!

Our rural schools regularly run charity trail rides as fundraising events - they are well supported by bikes & quads. Because my wife & I were on holiday in Taranki, I took the WRR along to ride the Whangamomona trail ride - the WRR was the only plated bike there. https://www.youtube.com/user/aem28186#p/a/u/2/EydSkKudPLQ
And some March rides http://www.advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=12664143&postcount=674

Here is some video of my WRR in slow motion. Yes, I am a cautious rider but I did keep it upright all day

Its fun most times but last weekend's Link Track was outright gnarly. The bike performed well but I was shattered. The dirtbagz frames make great handholds for lifting the back wheel out of ruts. I must make a tugger strap for lifting the front end - which seems the heaviest. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=12836420&postcount=698

Okay, that wallerin' in the mud looks more like what I imagine SheWolfie does. Except she gets a lot dirtier in the process.
Thanks for sharing! Loved the Devil's Staircase writeup and vid also!

That ride looked like heaven! All that slop and drool...pretty good workout riding a trail system like that tho. How sore were your arms and legs after that?

Yes it's amazing how hot & sweaty you get rocking your bike in 1st gear, trying to get traction. After 8 km of singletrack I was exhausted. My limbs were fine, as I sat most of the way using my legs as outriggers and the 4 offs were all slow motion.

It's now the start of winter in NZ so we decided to check out how greasy the Devil's staircase is. Very but still passable - fortunately. Mark made a video of this great 55km loop.

Spring is just beginning here in New Zealand so when the weather forecast promised 5 fine days Mark and I packed our saddle bags and arranged to meet Straun in Reefton in the South Island. Here's Mark's great ride reports -

The Dusty Butt 1000 is a rollcharted 1000 km ride through the South Island high country during summer. It was wild and scenic country that these photos don't do justice to.
There were 3 WRRs amongst the 70 bikes doing the 2 day ride. Only 4 riders (inc a WRR) finished the 1000km in one day - those guys have iron butts and awesome stamina.
And last week I did a muddy adventure ride in Taranaki. The WRR made easy work of the mud compared to the 650's.

Rosie was also riding her white WRR on the Naki Nutters Liquidification Tour. And Bart did his usual superb job as photographer - which reminds me, need to buy a new camera because the last one died of dust.

Yes we ride thru winter and all year round. I guess everyone has their own idea of the perfect climate. But I like between 14-20*C when riding in the bush because I always break a sweat. Anything over 20*C is too hot so I don't think I will be doing the Cape York trip soon. Of course we try not to ride on rainy days but we do need some rain to create mud.
