Saddle height ? Seat Height ?

O.K. The seat height is great for me at its factory setting, but I was trying to persuade my lady friend to try to learn how to ride, and it was too high for her to contemplate trying.
So the question is - how low has anyone here lowered their bike ?
I thought I would ask before I start messing with it.
I don't want to buy a small bike for her, and then find that she is not interested.
Ideas anyone? .......
( I live days away from a dealership, so courses for learners are out of the question. )
