I noticed a clicking sound related to the throttle the other day. With the bike off twisting the throttle and releasing it makes a clicking sound at the top back of the engine. It sounds like metal on metal. Is that something I should get checked out?

How much free play do you have at the throttle grip?

There is about a quarter if an inch or about 1/16 of full throttle

To get the best idea, remove the seat and fuel tank and have a look while you twist the throttle.

If it were my bike, I'd lubricate both cables and reduce the slack to 4 milimeters, making sure the throttle snaps back with the handlebar turned full left and full right.

Could be normal throttle-slide-hitting-the-stop sound, meaning plenty of slack (or too much). Doesn't hurt to check, though. I keep mine as tight as I can get away with. Slack (especially excessive) seems to exacerbate low speed off-idle jerkiness.

I was under the impression most modern cables were inner sheathed, making lube unnecessary (and even harmful if the wrong solvents were present in the lube.)

Oh that's good news, my clutch cable was very loose so hopefully it's the same thing
