These was through converting but I got 39mpg on my first tank which doesn't seem that right too me. Is it is because it is new? Or is there something else at play?

Fuel light came on at 90kms or 2.6L left.

Thought I would be getting higher than that as it is 100% stock.

Any help?

Thank you Very happy

Where are you from? What gallons are you converting to? US gallons or European/UK/Australian gallons?

If it's US gallons and you've done the math right, that is low and should have nothing to do with being new.

Gas mileage is all about the throttle hand and riding conditions.

If you were doing 60-70 mph on the freeway for most of that tank that might actually be correct.

You have not really given enough information to know. Are you sure tank was full when you started?

On average here, the mpg when done using USA gallons is from a low of about 45-50 mpg to some people getting over 70 mpg.

may be a stupid question but I'm just asking to make sure. Did you PERSONALLY fill up the bike? you say it's new so maybe you had the dealer fill it up for ya? he most likely didn't fill it up all the way. I bought my bike brand new from a dealer and it had about enough gas in for 80-100 km, but was no where near full

fuel light on a completely stock bike should come on at least at 130 km if you ride it hard or wasn't filled to the brim. I usually get 140-150-160 km before light goes on.

Seems low for sure. I get to 140kms before fuel light commuting. When I do lots of dirt riding, and I ride the piss out of the bike, I still get 110kms before the light. When I bought my bike the dealer 'filled' it for me. They put in half a tank max.

I've found my mileage can vary wildly depending how wildly I drive.

If I stay below 65 on the freeway and don't treat every traffic light like a drag strip, I get about 60 mpg (I have a pipe and programmer)

If I cruise at 80 on the freeway, I get about 45-50 mpg.

The worst I've managed was pinning the throttle into a headwind for an hour and a half, I got about 35 mpg.

Hi sorry about the lack of details.

This is Australian litres converted to US gallons.

The dealer was the one who gave the first tank of petrol and I was pretty sure it was full.

I was only doing about 50km-80km/h and babying it to break it in.

It worked perfectly at first but then took a turn for the worse with the fuel range.

Could the fuel programming be off?

Please fill your tank yourself. Reset your trip meters and report back after you've done at least another tank of gas and another fill up.

The dealer more than likely did not "fill" the tank.

Babying it during break in you are likely to get 65+mpg.

Your crappy mpg are from the motor breaking in, once it loosens up it will get better.

I got mine with like 4 miles on the odo and first tank was over 70mpg since I was babying it.

See, that's what I was expecting and was quite surprising when the fuel light came on.

You're under warranty right? No rush in finding the prob. Do a few more tanks and if its still not right, have it checked out under warranty.

G'day there mate - i'm in OZ as well and my bike from new has been pretty consistant with it's fuel consumption. I'm getting figures of about 4 Litres per 100 k's. So therefore my low fuel light comes on at approx 130 k's. I fitted the 12 o'clock labs speedo correction unit after about 500 k's - so all my current readings are 100% spot on, as my speedo was dialed in using a GPS. So with the stock speedo being way out - mine was more than 10% 'fast" from the factory - your odo is actually clocking more k's than you have actually traveled. So the real fuel consumption figure will be at least 7~10 % worse than what your optomistic speedo shows.

I ran my bike in pretty hard, and also i'm quite heavy on the throttle too, so i'm pretty fucken ok with the 4L/100.... At present the majority of my riding is on the road, with a combo of light / medium traffic, and some 80~100 k zones. ( About 175 cm tall & 90 kg's ).

My bike has a few mods, such as GYTR rear pipe, AIS delete & air fapper mod. G2 Quick turn Throttle Tube is one of the best improvements i have done - but makes it even easier to be "heavy handed". Also TPS is set to 19/99 & CO presently at +6. When i first did these base mods my fuel consumption did seem to slighlty increase - but i then fitted a "needle" tip Iridium NGK spark plug which did seem to re-gain that slight loss in "ecconomy". Also seems to run a bit better / more crisp with the H/P spark plug.
Now have almost 4,000 klm's on the bike in 7 months.

As suggested by others here, please carry out further & more accurate testing - as in make sure to fill to correct max level, also be sure to use PULP - as recommended by Yamaha min 95 RON. Also i prefer if you can report back with straight out metric figures = as in Litres per 100 k's. So therefore just fill up, re-set trip meter, then after "shown" 100 k's on ODO, re-fill and note total Litres. This will be the most simple way to get your L per 100. ( Even better if you have a accurate hand held GPS or such ).

I believe that you may have mixed up the conversion calculation somewhere along the way, as for a "babied" run in & with overly optimistic standard speedo, then that's excessive fuel consumption. ( Or more likely as others have also mentioned = the Dealer has only done "standard" 3/4 fill ).

Anyway look into it a bit more & report back please mate.

Cheers, Gavin.

Nope. Not buying that.

Please read his posts. He did not fill tank. The dealer he bought bike from put gas in tank. Huge difference.

It's a safe bet the dealer did not "fill" tank.

The OP simply needs to stop worrying about anything. He needs to fill his tank himself, at least twice, then do the gas mileage math and report back.

On the odometer, the stock odometer is supposedly spot on. Yamaha purposefully made the stock speed readings optimistic by adding some percent on top of the correct readings the odometer gets. Very lame, I know.. As far as I know, correcting the speedometer with the 12 o'clock labs unit corrects the speedometer but in turn makes the odometer incorrect. The only way to have both correct at the same time is to just use GPS for everything, ignoring the stock cluster.

This is true. I have a speedohealer set to -11% or something and the speedo is on, but the odometer under-reports the mileage, which means I am actually getting better fuel economy than I think... Very happy My 23 mile commute to work (according to car and GPS) shows up as 20.9 miles on the WRx.

What does a speedohealer or 12o'clock labs unit have to do with any of this? scratch

They guy has no clue what kind of fuel economy he's getting because he hasn't done any due diligence to actually figure out what's going on.

He has no idea how much gas was in the tank yet he's concerned with fuel economy?????? poser2

It's a stock bike. Brand new from dealer. Dealer put gas in it and handed him keys.

Odometer accuracy and speedometer accuracy are moot points.

Let the guy ride the bike for a while, get a few tanks of gas through the system, and report back.

All other discussion is topes

More so concerned with buying an $11,000 bike and not getting the expected fuel range.

In America they are about $6000ish new? Almost double that here so I want to know what I payed for if the fuel economy continues in this fashion.

You can't expect to know a thing without making sure the tank was full to begin with.

Fill the tank yourself. Twice at least. Use the odometer reset features, and then do the math and report back.

The dealer did not fill your tank. Would bet lots-o-money on that.

What kind of fuel economy are you expecting?

Great. Should be easy to get with a 100% stock bike.

Now go ride it. A few hundred miles.

Fill the tank. Set trip meter to zero. Ride until light comes on. Fill tank again. Do math.

Repeat that.

Then report back what you got.

Still on the second tank but I am now up to 140kms without the fuel light coming on. Hard 80km-100km/h riding in heavy winds and still fuel left :)

Also just found out my speedo is way off even though it's stock so that may have jarred the first tanks range.

No.

All stock from Yamaha speedometers are off around 7.7%.

Odometers are correct.

The first tank's range was that the dealer did not fill tank.

Not sure why you refuse to believe that.

Not sure why you have been so passive aggressive towards me with this subject but that is beyond me. I'm done, you said to report back and I did and I want no more to do with you.
