Counter Shaft Empty
PostSubject: Counter Shaft   Counter Shaft EmptyMon Dec 01, 2014 6:31 am

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone has ever replaced the counter shaft or knows how much of the engine has to come apart to access the transmission.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Engine comes out of the frame and onto your workbench.
Engine comes completely apart - both top end and bottom end.

Sounds like a lot of work.

Has anyone ever welded a front sprocket on?

I've seen it, but I've never done it.
What happened to yours?

Front sprocket nut was loose. The splines are chewed up and the thread for the but is also.

I've seen them welded.

If you can clean up the threads for the nut, put the sprocket and nut on normal like than weld the sprocket to the nut, this way you can get it back off and redo it with a new sprocket and nut when it wears out.

Stuff happens. I got a brand new XR250 after college. I rode it around the neighborhood and a small rock got stuck between the countershaft sprocket and seal, cutting the seal open.

On that bike the countershaft seal had to come out to the inside. So I tore apart a brand new engine to replace a $5 seal!! It can be done, just takes time and a shop manual.

Yep, I had to weld mine on yesterday to get home. I was riding at the MX track at the sprocket/shaft stripped. Shaft is screwed so just welded the nut to the sprocket and the nut to the shaft.
