Bike stalled at 60 mph Empty
PostSubject: Bike stalled at 60 mph   Bike stalled at 60 mph EmptySat Aug 08, 2015 11:55 am

I just bought a 2013 WRR with fewer than 1500 miles on the odo. Bike had FMF pipe / header / programmer installed, but only about 50 miles were put on the bike with this config. I think the bike sat around largely unused for 6-8 months.

I rode the bike home, quite a long way. It did over 200 miles without issue. Then, about 30 minutes from home, the bike seemed to stall at 60 mph. After about 2-3 seconds of coasting with the clutch pulled in, the throttle came back and there were no more issues as I made it home.

Things I wish I'd noticed during those 2-3 seconds, but can't answer:

  • Did the engine light come on?
  • Did the dash turn off?
  • Was the engine still idling?

My best guesses:

  • Spark plug needs replacing.
  • Fuel filter clogged.
  • Electrics cut out.
  • I was having too good of a time and the Universe had to check me.

Any more informed thoughts? Thanks, folks.

Bump the programmers 5th setting up to 6 or higher.

If its set below 6 you will get cutouts cruising at 60ish mph, which are just like what you described but mine only lasted a second or so not 2-3 seconds.

Thanks for the tip. Did some reading and this seems to be a common issue with the programmer, I'm interested to hear more details about what other people experience who have solved the issue by changing the 5th setting.

As for the length of time the throttle cut out, a couple of thoughts: (1) I could be over-estimating the time it was out, and (2) other reports of the issue say that the throttle comes back after letting off and then putting the throttle back on. I believe when mine went out, I twisted the throttle further first before letting off and rolling back on, after which it came back.

I had that. Changed the 5th setting to a value of "6" and now it happens, maybe once per riding season....No biggie, just drop the throttle and then continue with the ride.  thumb
When it happens now, it's a surprise because it's so rare. Before I had changed the settings, it would happen quite often.

Same issue when I ran my FMF programmer.

If I remember right the 5th number tells it how soon to add fuel when accelerating.  IT the number is less than 6 the mixture is too rich and the bike will die.  Once you back off the throttle the fuel ratio drops back into the right range and the engine runs again.

I ended up setting mine to 8 and never had the issue again when I was running the FMF programmer.  Then I found a local dyno shop and ordered a Power Commander 5 and had them set that up for me.

Then after fight no starts of several occasions I just said screw it and put everything back to stock. Life has been good since even though it maybe a little slower.... but then again so am I.
