Fork seals that are Always leaking. Empty
PostSubject: Fork seals that are Always leaking.   Fork seals that are Always leaking. EmptyFri Aug 17, 2018 8:35 pm

I got my WR in the spring. After I got it on the road I noticed the left fork was leaking.
No problem, ordered the OEM seal / shim kit. Installed both sides. The right is fine.
The left keeps leaking. and leaking, and leaking.
I keep thinking I messed something up, but I've used 1 OEM, 2 All Balls, 2 Pivot Works.
And she keeps leaking.
There are no nicks or gouges in the tube that you can feel with your fingers.

Anybody else out there have a never ending battle with 1 fork?

Ideas? Tube out of round? I have no idea.

Thanks in advance.

How did you put the seal on the tube?

If I remember right you slide all the seals on the small tube first and then insert the small tube into the larger tube and use a fork seal driver to set the seal.

When sliding the seal on the new tube you should use a fork bullet or a plastic bag that is placed over the sharp edge of the fork tube to keep the tube from nicking the seal on install.

Another thing to look for is for nicks or burrs in the fork tube itself.

It's easy to miss a small nick in the fork tube.
Believe it or not, guys will use 600 grit emery cloth to polish the lower fork tube to ensure nicks are removed.

See some YouTube videos on how this is done.

I have the seal driving tool.
I protected the seals with a thin piece of plastic while sliding over the fork tube.
Next time I will polish the tube. It must be something like that.
Thanks for the sanding tip. Off to youtube now.
cheers

A small srath on the tube can be filled with superglue and sanded down with fine sandpaper.
