Fuel injection relay issue Empty
PostSubject: Fuel injection relay issue   Fuel injection relay issue EmptyMon May 13, 2024 8:26 pm

I have a 2013 wr250r. With about 7000 miles. Was running well When i put it away for winter. Been still riding it periodically all winter without issue. Then about 2 weeks ago I had it out and noticed check engine light on. Now when I turn on the key and switch the fuel pump just keeps running. I'm getting check engine light but when I used the diagnostic tool it's not giving me any codes. When I troubleshoot d50 "fuel injection system relay" the relay is not firing. Everything else seems ok. The odd thing is that it seems to start and run just fine despite the check engine light. I tried replacing the main relay that turns on the fuel pump thinking maybe it was sticking but I guess that isn't the same as the fuel injection relay. I found a video on YouTube that says the fuel injection relay is in a cluster of wires near the battery but I can't figure out which one it is considering it doesn't click when I use the diagnostic tool.
Can anyone out there point me to the right relay... Or a part number... Or anything that might get me moving in the right direction.
Basically I need to know what relay clicks when running the diagnostic tool on d50.

Thanks

From what you say this sounds like a fuel pressure regulator issue: the pump stops because the fuel pressure has reached its target (36 psi), not because of anything the electrical relay does; if the pump never stops this means that the regulator is stuck in the open position and the pump has to work constantly to keep the pressure high.

Quantum makes an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator, but unfortunately it is set at a higher pressure than the OEM one, so you would need to adjust your fuel programmer to deliver less fuel.

Johnkol. Thank you very much for the reply. This leads me to another question... From what reading I've done so far, I was under the impression that the fuel regulator valve is just a mechanical valve that doesn't actually turn the pump off but redirects the flow back into the tank when it reaches its limit which allows for it to maintain a constant correct pressure when running. But when the pump comes on to prime it's just a timed event from the ECU.... And shuts off because the ECU turns it off not because the valve shuts it off... Am I wrong here? I've seen a lot of fuel pump issues on this forum but can't find any that have the issue of not turning off. They are pretty much all lack of fuel or pump not turning on.

Figured it out. I purchased this bike a little before winter of last year from a guy who had it sitting in a shed outside for about a year. He said he hardly ever drove it. I'm thinking the shed had some mice living in it. I started chasing wires back from the fuel pump, then from the ECU... On the bottom of wiring harness that plugs into the ECU there were several wires with the insulation worn (chewed) off. One wire was completely broke. The wire to the fuel pump must have been shorting against another wire causing it to always be powered up. I repaired the wires and now it's running like a champ. Also, when I do the d50 diagnostic test I can now hear the fuel injection system relays clicking on and off like they should be. Hopefully this helps someone someday.
