Seat Concepts - Seat Concepts Empty
PostSubject: Seat Concepts   Seat Concepts - Seat Concepts EmptyThu Sep 02, 2010 9:43 am

We've been talking about this seat kit here and there on the forum, but since I promised pictures I figured I'd start a new thread with the title. I placed my order last Wed 25th, got it this Tues 31st. Here's the seat pan, factory foam, Seat Concepts foam:

I'd shaved somewhere in the neighborhood of 3/4" of my factory foam to give me a little more reach. I specified the Seat Concepts foam 1" lower than standard:

I chose all Carbonfiber vinyl for my cover, here it is finished up:

Haven't had a chance to get it on the bike and ride yet, but I'll holler back when I do. You can read more on this seat kit here:

Does your photograph with the stapler imply that the stapler pictured was sufficient to fasten the fabric to the pan?
I was under the impression that an air stapler was required, or maybe I was just hoping Very happy

That's it, a Stanley Sharpshooter; I set the seat and stapler down and took the picture. Work off of a hard surface so you can bear down as you staple.

Sarah

p.s. Thanks, Wayne!

About 700 miles on the seat so far and I can't believe what a difference it's made. Who'd a thought a simple slab of foam could do that? We took a trip to Alabama and back over the last couple of days, 300+ miles each way, I breezed right along with never a thought of my rear end. I'd recommend this seat to anybody, hands down.

Sarah,
What size staple did you use? Staple depth seems critical in so many projects, so just wondering what your experience was in case I decide to go this route for my wife's WR (I have the Sargent on mine and love it. Bought before this option existed).

PostSubject: Grippy-ness (Grippiness?)   Seat Concepts - Seat Concepts EmptyTue Sep 07, 2010 11:28 am

Quick question -

Is your seat the carbonfibre look version and if so is it the one on the seatconcepts product list - i.e. gripper in the middle and smooth on each side?

Is the gripper material the same as stock, more grippy or less grippy? Does anyone have a different skin version on their bike?

EDIT - I see you went for ALL VINYL. How is that?

Stanley 1/4" staples with tapered points, specified for the Light Duty Sharpshooter. Work off a hard surface and use the palm of your other hand to bear down hard on the stapler.

I think the all Carbonfiber vinyl is just right. Not what I'd call slippery, but easy to shift and change positions when you want to. When I talked to Robert about choices for covers, he said the gripper seat was considered GRIPPY. I'd been told the same by another forum member who'd sent me a pm suggesting I look at something other than the gripper as it was almost too much grip. That makes me think it was more so than stock.

Went for 300 mile ride on my Seat Concepts seat on Monday.

Much improved comfort over stock or my XPC Racing seat.

I used a pneumatic stapler with 1/4 inch staples.

Hey BigFeet,

Put another 1500 or so miles on last week during fall break. No regrets whatsoever, worth much more than those guys charge in my opinion. I noticed over on Advrider, there's a thread in Vendors and another in Equipment.

greer - you're lucky that you managed to DIY the seat with that stapler.

I tried - I didn't have the reach to get into the groves on the sides of the seat pan - anywhere else along the pan there didn't seem optimal - I was making a balls of it anyway so rang a custom bike builder here and he gave the number of a guy 5 minutes from me who refinishes seats - €30 and a perfect job.
That was how much the stapler cost me.

Corkonian,

You are right; I just stapled either side of the deep groove. It seems to be holding fine. It did look like a job to dread until I actually went to work on it. If you had a shop handy I don't blame you for taking it in.

taoshum,

Shouldn't make a bit of difference, you're using the stock pan.

spoke with Robert at Seat Concepts. It was a very informative conversation.

Robert thinks we should go with no gripper and go with carbon fiber for top and sides.

Yep, that's the cover I chose. I'm betting you'll think this is well worth the money.

I can't wait to get my Seat built. I went for the carbon (non-gripper) on sides and top. I don't think my stapler will be up to the job but I've not found a shop to do it yet. I should just bite the bullet and do it myself.

They look lovely in the flesh, so to speak.

You'll have a fit to try the seat as soon as you get it, if you're like me. If you've got a stapler handy, give it a whirl. It's not as bad as you think.
