| Thanks to inmate Eakins for the ideas for a locking cap AND for the filler neck strainer! He posted these in the monster thread way back when and they fit just as he said they would.

| Thanks for the review Larry! Looks Like I'll be getting a cap. No need to give fuel bandits easy access. _________________ A wolf's voice echoed down the mountain 'Share the bounty of the hunt with your brothers and sisters, and forever be strong and free.' | |

| Looks good BigFeet! But I'ma about to show my ignance on modern bikes. Every dirt bike I ever owned had a vent and we normally ran the vent tube from the cap to the top thingy so we could ruin the head tube bearings by washing out the grease with gas-0-leen. I think I know the answer but I feel comfortable here by askin here anyway. Steel tank comes stock on the WRR with no vent is because the tank is pressurized for FI and fuel pump? | |

It's a good question. I suspect but don't know that the stock Yamaha locking cap might be vented somehow?
The Acerbis locking cap is vented, just not with a hose. I guess it's some kinda' freaqqy inertia valve that's supposed to close on tip over?
Anyhow, I haven't had it "vapor lock" due to vacuum in the tank so I figure somethin' is workin'. Likewise, I didn't hear any "WHOOSH" when opening the cap on a hot day at the petrol station, so I figure the venting must be working.
If you look at the inside photo of the Acerbis cap, it's kind of a long goose neck looking thing. I think that's maybe for the vent valve or maybe some labyrinth for liquid/air separation when venting??
In any case, my main point is that the Acerbis locking cap works nicely on my WRX.
I suspect the stock cap is vented. Or was there a vent line at the back of the stock tank? I dunno, I think I'm mixin' up my old KLR tank with my WRX.
Larry S. Howdy Larry. I think I get it now. Some sort of floating ping pong ball thing. That makes sense.

| looking good. this is becoming the popular mod for anyone with an ims tank no matter the bike and i have posted this thread elsewhere.
dot & epa require oem style caps to not leak when tipped over and yet vent. so does the military. so when hayes diversified uses larger ims tanks on the klr military bike they mold in kawasaki factory cap threads (for an oem kawi cap) as the ims cap (w/ ims threads) is just a rubber gasket w/ offset holes to vent. it will leak. drop your bike with an ims cap and you will have gas coming out. in a sense the Acerbis cap is safer from that persceptive as the IMS cap is cheap and basic.
this still all comes back to chuck @ ims saying this would not work or he was not satisfied with how it clamped shut. like i posted awhile back, i knew otherwise it would work and glad you trusted in that. i do hope that ims does eventually produce their own proper locking cap (and possibly a cheaper option of a non-leaking but non-locking cap) as they are now producing a good bit of non-dirtbike tanks ie dual-sports and thus riders who want security. technically everone who is using the IMS tank onroad is breaking the law as your cap leaks.
i guess if not then Acerbis is gonna sell ALOT of caps.

| You didn't miss it. It wasn't in here. I ordered by phone due to some confusion at that time as to which cap... so no link for it.

| Thanks! I just ordered one. I am trying to mount a tank bag on the IMS tank and the vent tube is a problem. This should eliminate that problem. | |

| Great information and your series of tests convinces me that the IMS tank is the deal for me. However, I wish you hadn't gone the extra mile to test the tank leakage. Next time, just lean the bike over in the garage. Thanks again. | |

| Hi Everyone,
Just a word of caution about the Acerbis locking cap for the WR250R and IMS 3.1 gallon tank. Mine didn't fit. I was able to lock it, and it spun freely as it was supposed to once locked. However, with a bit of effort I could easily pop off the cap with both hands while locked. I consulted with BigFeet on this issue and it looks as though there is a potential incompatibility between some IMS 3.1 tanks and the Acerbis cap - perhaps due to subtle differences in manufacturing tolerances in the tank cap's opening and threads.
Just thought I'd give everyone a heads-up just in case they are considering this locking gas cap.

Thanks SheWolf, Bigfeet confirmed that his cap was on solid as well. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for mine. Having said that - I am really loving the IMS 3.1 g tank. I had to do some quick modifications/compromises to get my Corbin seat to fit though. Mike

| It's too bad the guys that used to post on here with stuff have decided to stay on that monster ADV thread. We had some really good contributors; Larry was one of them. _________________ A wolf's voice echoed down the mountain 'Share the bounty of the hunt with your brothers and sisters, and forever be strong and free.' | |

| I had talked to Just Gas Tanks last year and they said they had tried the Acerbis locking cap on the IMS 3.1 and it wouldn't work. Other people have since posted up that it does. And now again that it doesn't ??? | |
