Took the WR-250X out for the first ride of the 2011 season.
It felt very good.

Raining hard all day today...so took the opportunity to do the flapper mod and install an FMF programmer. It was all quite easy, thanks to this and other WR sites (laptop was in the garage right next to me). Have a stock exhaust so got the right settings from the FI mapping sticky. Took a quick rip on the slab in the downpour...felt snappier...look forward to taking for an off-road test. Next on the list will be a GYTR exhaust (want to keep the stock heat shield), then a 3.1 IMS tank.

Well, I basically checked the C1 fuel setting and it was at -3, so I hit a few numbers and the motor sounded more responsive by the time I hit 3 (blipping the throttle). I went crazy and just set it to 7, then went for a ride. The bike runs much better than stock, but it's hard to single out any one change. Other changes I made all at the same time were the usual flapper, air pump block off, getting rid of some extra weight and installing a FMF powercore 4 pipe. Speaking of the powercore pipe, it seems louder than it really is if you have a helmet on. .... I say that because I moved the bike from one driveway to the other without my helmet and it really is a muffled tone... certainly not sharp and resonating like you hear with a helment on. So that was good to find out.

Back to the C1 7 setting. I was taking some video and I stopped the bike for a moment. When I cranked it back up, it wouldn't start. I cranked for about 4 seconds and then again for about 3. .... I could smell raw gas, so I opened the throttle and cranked for about 3 seconds when it finally fired back up. So the C1 setting is pretty rich (and it felt like it was kind of rich and blubbery down low). I'm betting the top end is lean though. It pulls good and beefy on most throttle settings, but wide open I would hope it would pull harder on top. Of course this could very well be a cam profile thing too. You can't have power everywhere, and this bike seems to have a good bit of it in the lower mids.

I also got to test drive the new lowering link that I bought off this thread starter here!! Wow! it works perfect. I think it is supposed to lower the bike a max of 2.5" (adding in the factory 1" lowering adjustment). I installed the link and it changes the leverage ratio, so the suspension is noticably softer. I cranked the preload back up to stiffen the rear back up, then I raised the factory 1" so the front and back are close. It seems to work perfect like that. The 1.5" reduction is just about right (I also lowered the forks about 3/4"). I only weigh about 145#, so the softer suspension is just about right for my weight. If you dirt ride this bike pretty hard, it may be too soft, but most of my riding will be local streets or fire trails. The kick stand even works fine without cutting it.... but have to be careful parking on surfaces slanted the wrong way, or on a high wind day.

Anyway, it was an interesting day with the bike. It was the first time I got to spend all day with it and it's such an excellent ride compared to dual sports of the past, or even the current day competition!

I'm out of town on business. So I ordered "stuff" for the WR. I love tax time. Good weather this weekend so I'm gonna swing by the office on the way home pick up the "stuff" ordered last week. And ride. If everything comes in by next weekend I can put "stuff" on the thing. I think I'll load the trailer and bring some bikes back out on the road since the weather looks to be good all week. I hooked up with the local dealer when I got to town and was promised a invite to a local riding area. And met a waitress that ain't ever been on a ride. I gotta bring the Harley for her. And the WR for me.

I rode mine to work today for the first time this year 73 degrees and sunny

Installed a gytr muffler, fmf power bomb, and fmf fuel programmer today.

Graves, Power Commander V, Auto Tune, YS Gear debris plate... sounds great!

Rear tire is nearly bald, so the new Michelin Pilot Powers will be on sooner than later. ;)

Let's see...I put on a locking gas cap, new rear and front sprocket, and a new chain. Thing definitely rolls much easier with the standard chain! Oh and new skins are on order.

Which gas cap did you get and where did you get it Shewolf?

I got the Acerbis large locking gas cap, from the Yammie dealer here in BC. Took one day to get it, which shocked the hell out of me. Fits like a glove. Not sure if it was Steen Hansen or Parts Canada who had it listed, but I didn't get it thru Justgastanks.

Will you be "airing" your choice of those new skins soon?

Once they come in, yep. Still wearing off what's left of the Stone Eaters.

Yeah, you need those nice blue Yamaha ones for sure. That's a decent trailer though. Those things aren't cheap!

trav, nice trailer! if you dont have a garage of some sort, that trailer is great as a mobil shop too .. im saving up to buy one in the next few months very much needed

That's not my trailer I was just quoting DC's post. But I hear what you are saying. The problem I have....no where to park a trailer that size.
