| I went to my local Yamaha dealership and asked them how much a checkup/service was. The guy asked me if the valves had been checked yet I said no she has just 4000km on the odometer (2160 miles) and he said oh then it's about fricken time to do it!
I thought a valve job can wait until 20k? He quoted 300 Canadian Dollars for the valve job, checkup and oil change. Wondering if that is too expensive and if the valve job is neccessary at all.

| Um...yeah 4000 km isn't 'about time'. I'm 10k over that and no valve adjustment yet. I was told at 26k to have it checked, but it might not need it. _________________ A wolf's voice echoed down the mountain 'Share the bounty of the hunt with your brothers and sisters, and forever be strong and free.' | |

Why not torment him by asking why he wants to charge you $300 Cdn to do a valve job only one tenth of the mileage towards the point the service manual says it's necessary?

| Still have your manual? Take it in next time you plan to go and show him.
Oh and I'd probably look for another mechanic, one that's either more honest and/or one that knows wtf they're talking about.

| I wasn't sure what the manual said as I did not have it with me. Next time I'll take it along and ask him again. Unfortunately that's the only Yamaha Dealership in the area... | |

| I can do that same valve job for you for $100. In fact, it can be done over the phone, right after I receive your paypal payment. | |

| Well I went back to the shop. Told him my handbook says 20k. He said there is one valve job that has to be done before 4000. No idea if that's true. I can't find my handbook either... | |

| Yeah...no. Even my trusty tech at the Yammie dealer here said that's a load of crap. I'll be getting mine checked at 26k unless I hear some obvious noise up there. _________________ A wolf's voice echoed down the mountain 'Share the bounty of the hunt with your brothers and sisters, and forever be strong and free.' | |

I'd fire that dealer - do the maintenance yourself. It isn't difficult. ZED's WR had more than 10,000km on it when we chose to check the valves due to increased noise. Everything was great Seriously, change your oil frequently, lube your chain now & then, add fuel & enjoy!

0 If you can locate a computer and get on the internet you can download the manual. Maybe you can ask a friend to help.

| Ok folks, just FYI. In my owners manual page 7-3: #4: Valve Clearance. CHECK AND ADJUST VALVE CLEARANCE WHEN ENGINE IS COLD> EVERY 42,000km, or 26,600 miles. _________________ A wolf's voice echoed down the mountain 'Share the bounty of the hunt with your brothers and sisters, and forever be strong and free.' | |

I really hate dealers who are stealers: Owner's Manual: Service Manual: Clear enough? Please note the part in the Service Manual where it says "All Service Technicians should be familiar with this entire chapter". You might want to use a highlighter on that point for buddy. So the question is... how far do you want to push it? You can print those off if you haven't downloaded everything yet and ask him to show you the Yamaha manual or Tech document that says you are supposed to pay him for a valve job before 4000 kms. I would be writing a letter of complaint to Yamaha Canada, with a cc to the local better business bureau. He is either deliberately trying to rip you off, or so indifferently ignorant of the bike that he shouldn't be a dealer in the first place. You may value some kind of relationship with him because he's the only dealer where you are. In my view, you don't WANT any kind of relationship with a dealer like you have there, and there are plenty others nearby, a few hours away. Care to share the name of this dealership, being as I occasionally are riding in your area and may find the need to visit a Yammy dealer?

| Thanks ALOT Jäger for posting this. I might print it off to show it to him, first time I show up there with the bike. I don't want to ruin the "relationship" though because he's also the only Klim dealer for the next 130kms. Things like that make me loose fate in dealerships (not that I ever had fate in them really). I got screwed at the Chevy dealership lately, repair was supposed to cost 200 dollars but was 900 in the end. Yesterday I found out it leaks oil again, from the spot they fixed 6 months ago. Sent you a PM. | |

Thanks for the PM but don't be afraid to "out" these guys. It's your choice, but consider that the next guy might get snagged by this dealer because he doesn't realize he's talking shyte. A little warning to the crew doesn't hurt. That's one stealership I'll be driving by if I'm over that way.

Which translated into US stealership speak is: "You need to spend more money at our shop so we can afford to stay in business"

Sent you a PM. Plenty of places on the internet you can order Klim stuff from. You can use the dealership to try stuff on and get sizing information, then go search for better prices and free shipping on the internet. I think you mean you would lose "faith" in them. Out the dealership. It might be just one guy who works there, but it sure might help somebody else reading these threads to know they might want to use a little caution if they need some assistance somewhere. _________________ 2008 WR250X Gearing: 13t - 48t Power Commander 5 / PC-V Airbox Door Removed - Flapper glued - AIS removed FmF Q4 Bridgestone Battlax BT-003rs
