Hi everybody!

I bought a wr250x with some dirt wheels in October. Finally put it down for winter, but I'm planning a good long trip next summer.

Trouble is, the PO put on a complete FMF powercore setup, along with all the AIS, EXUP, airbox mods/removals. I'll be bopping around for 8000 miles or more, and I really don't want to deal with the noise, or the repacking.

Can I simply toss on the stock setup back on and reprogram the FMF powertuner? Will I have a catalytic converter issue without the EXUP over such a long distance? I'd be interested to hear any opinions.

Thanks!

You don't have the parts to reconnect the EXUP?

yes - you can re-program fuel programmer. I think setting everything to the lowest (0.5) setting is basically setting it to the stock Yamaha setting.
Or - just remove the programmer while you're tearing everything apart.

If you can't reconnect EXUP cables I would do some experimenting to find out which way the valve is positioned to be fully open at all times.
Then I'd try to safety wire it in that open position.

You should be fine that way.

Hopefully some others will confirm or deny my thoughts.

Never trust just one opinion on the internet.

Do you have the ability to put the AIS stuff back on and reconstruct the airbox mods back to stock?
As in, do you have the parts that were removed?

It might be easier, and more fun for you to start using ear-plugs when you ride.

Or see if you can trade somebody your powercore canister for a Q4 canister.

The Q4 is pretty quiet but still more responsive than the stock cork Yamaha puts on the bike.

Got the earplugs. I just don't want to be that guy that fires up a loud bike at 7am in the middle of a forest somewhere. GAHHHH

I've got the EXUP stuff, but not the AIS. When the weather warms up, I'll mess around with it.

See if that guy can post pictures of what he bought....maybe he can sell it to you at a discount if it looks like it'd work.

Well I can't speak from experience yet, but you may want to try putting the 1-1/8" insert into the Powercore....see my other post. Apparently it gets the sound down quite a bit.

I've complained about the loudness of my pc4 since day 1...though I like the tone.
After, recently, sneaking in a few winter rides (that normally wouldnt happen)...I was glad how the loud growl and scream seemed to make more satisfaction out of my, shorter than usual, jaunts.
Maybe I'm getting used to it...or maybe my hearing is fading faster than I predicted...regardless, It makes the most of what I got.

It definitely adds fulfilment to that 250cc people criticize...fulfilling for me at least.
Especially, when your trying to make the most of your moments....f**k the neighbours.

I think that quiet insert might be worth a look. Not much scratch to give it a shot.

Assuming I keep the FMF on there, what's the frequency of repacking? Should I repack the thing every three thousand miles with an oil change?

Make sure you get the "right" one. As we've seen, the FmF website sucks and might steer you wrong.

Do some extra double-checking before you click the pay now button.

Part number 040630. It's the one that has the screen hanging off the end and tapers more. Trim an inch or so off the screen end and fold the rest over the baffle. Result is much more tolerable sound level.

Dennis Kirk had the correct one.

Maybe somebody who has autotune could post a map for this setup?

A Powercore4 has two insert options for quieting it down. Option 1 is the 1 3/8 ID insert (p/n 040288) that what the Q4 comes with and should knock of a handful of db. Option2 is the 1 1/8 insert (040630) that Gundy is recommending that will be the most effective.

The PC4 doesn't have the perforated wall inside the baffle tube like the Q4. As a result, the 040630 insert fits all the way inside the PC4 and there should be no need to trim the spark arresting mesh.
