Going back to stock exhaust, but no EXUP?? Empty
PostSubject: Going back to stock exhaust, but no EXUP??   Going back to stock exhaust, but no EXUP?? EmptyThu Mar 29, 2012 6:54 am

Need some help with this guys and gals.

I am putting my standard exhaust back on, but I have removed the EXUP stuff, just want to know, is the EXUP valve set to open all the time and therefore having my stock exhaust back on and no EXUP connected it will just be free flowing all the time?

Thanks.

Yes - there's a spring on the exup valve on the pipe. It holds the valve open.

You should be able to see it open by just looking into the end of the pipe that connects to header. Might need a flashlight. thumb

I checked this for somebody else once. I have a picture of it somewhere around this forum.

The EXUP on a WR-250R or WR-250X only closes (or partially closes) for brief periods at certain throttle positions and/or engine loads, as if it's more about cutting noise for EPA sound regulations, which, today, are rediculously tight.
Just look at all of the foam stuck to the plastic side panels, which is there to deaden sound.
Same for the rubber cushions on the spprocket(s).

Myself, I'd go with an FMF Q4 muffler.
It's a good compromise between the plugged-up stock muffler and (what I am assuming to be the case) that tiny and noisy Staintune muffler you were using.
I dislike loud bikes, myself, and even I use the FMF Q4 mufflers (on several bikes).
