Front tire has slow leak. Safe to use Slime? Empty
PostSubject: Front tire has slow leak. Safe to use Slime?   Front tire has slow leak. Safe to use Slime? EmptyFri Jun 01, 2012 12:54 am

My front tire is loosing air, probably a snake bite after I hit a rock last weekend. It takes more than a week and a half to have it go all the way flat.
Now with such a tiny hole, would it be safe to use Slime? Does anybody have experience with that stuff?
I put some slime into my trailer spare tire, had a nail hole, it's been holding the air for a couple months now.

Will it affect the balance?

dunno

It's fine to use. The bigger question is if it will work. I have used it a lot over the years in off-road bikes and there have been times where it worked great and other times it didn't help at all. Can't hurt to try it though.

Front tire - life depends on it.

New tube. Period.

Will it work? Probably.

Balance? It should distribute itself evenly, eventually.

Would I use it? Not likely. That stuff is messy. Consider that tube toast once you remove it. If slime leaks out of the hole in the tube it'll get into the tire. Did I mention it's messy, nasty stuff? New tubes are cheap enough, and it's a simple enough job to replace. I spoon new tires on for the track and swap back to my street tires every outing with nothing more than two tire spoons, a cut up 2 liter soda bottle, my ramp, and some 2x4 blocks.

I ran it in my tubes for roughly 6K miles as a precaution against flats. It didn't seem to be a problem and since the tube contained most of it there wasn't very much mess to clean up later.

If you ride on the highway a lot I'd say it's worth replacing, but for primarily offroad... I wouldn't bother.

I use it in ice tires. It works most of the time.

Get the stuff for tubeless wheels. The tube type slime eats aluminum if bare or coating is scratched. deal

Thanks everybody. I never changed tubes on a motorcycle but shouldn't be much different from my MTB. I read a lot about how messy that can be. I rather stay away and buy a new tube.

Same process it's just much more difficult to break the bead. I suggest having 3 tire irons and some tire lube handy. It makes it much easier.
