PostSubject: Front sprocket broken tooth   Front sprocket broken tooth EmptyTue Apr 02, 2013 12:58 pm

I have the stock 13T front sprocket but one of the teeth has broken off. How bad is that? I've been riding it like this, nothing has seemed wrong until i actually saw the broken tooth. Thanks!

Get a new one.

Inspect chain and rear sprocket.

Maybe it's a sign you should upgrade them all. thumb

How many miles on current set-up?

Change gearing from stock to something more lively. Stock gearing sucks and is boring. amazon amazon amazon

10,XXX miles. They are all pretty cheap correct? I'll probably just upgrade them all. What do you recommend for sprockets (i ride mostly street but i do get her dirty a lot)?

The front sprocket is shot, and with that milage, the chain is probably on it's way out, too.
Time for new chain and both sprockets.

The chain is in spec and looks good, i think it has been replaced before. How bad is the sprocket missing a tooth... Can i ride for a week until i can get a new one?

Thanks

Front sprockets are dirt cheap and you should replace it ASAP. If there are jagged and rough edges on sprocket it will wear your chain and even possibly cause a chain break which can have catastrophic results.

Your closest Yamaha dealer or motorcycle parts store should have a sprocket that will fit. Look up the YZ sprocket compatible part numbers.

Also - at 10,000+ miles check your chain slider (swingarm protector) NOW. Might need to replace that too if you haven't already.

Suggested gearing - anything 13/45 through 13/48. (your speedo will go farther off as you change gearing though)

Been there.
Done that.
That is, buying a used bike where I thought the chain was good.
That's why I'd not blink an eye at buying a new chain at the same time - another sealed O- or X-ring chain, one with a rivet master link, too.

Ok cool, how much with the 13/48 throw off my speedo? Just so i can calculate it will I'm riding. Also how much should i pay for sprockets and a chain? There are packages for like 134 on eBay but that seems high when i can get a 13T for $12 and a 48t for $25.

Thanks for your help.

Can you recommend me a chain from eBay? Do i nee a longer one for a bigger rear sprocket? Thanks

Your speedo will be out about ~20% with 13/48.

You'll need a 112 link chain.

Chains are sort of expensive, relative to sprockets, so paying $75 to $100 for a chain is gonna be about right.

I got my stuff from here.

OK cool, sorry about all these questions, so does this work?

I chatted with some tech from the site and they said these would work and are priced good. What do you think?

I just installed primary drive sprockets and they seem fine for everyday use. You can't beat the price either.

If you want to get another 10k miles out of your chain I'd go with either an x-ring or o-ring. The former is a little better but I'm not sure how much of a difference it really makes. I think this is the chain I just put on my WRR:
http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/43/53/222/958/-/24278/RK-520EXW-XW-RING-Chain?term=rk+x-ring+520+chain

Any 520 x or o ring chain will work. I've had good experiences with DID and RK. I am skeptical of Primary Drive chains but they might be fine.

I have not heard anything about Primary Drive chains. From a quick google search reviews are mixed:
http://www.thumpertalk.com/topic/379823-primary-drive-chain-a-review/
http://www.dirtrider.net/forums3/showthread.php?t=140019

If they're requiring that much adjustment I'd be surprised if you got the same life as an RK or DID.

I'm fairly certain I'm running the Primary Drive x-ring chain on my bike. Tension adjustments have been necessary, but not nothing abnormal. So far so good!

It's debatable whether this is cheap but I have this and it works very well on the WR:

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/2/9/200/28665/ITEM/MSR-Pro-Lift-Stand.aspx?WT.ac=SLIsearch

I would discourage against a fixed stand you have to lift the bike onto, the WR is pretty heavy to lift.

Do you know of any rear stands like that lift up the rear axle? If not ill buy the lift, i think they are cheaper at other places on the net.

Not rear axle - you're looking for a swingarm stand.

Look at my avatar. I have one. They work great - until you need to remove the front wheel. woohoo

I've used various different chain brands over the years, and currently running with a Sunstar XTG as per below - seems like the goods so far.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/x-ring-chain-yamaha-banshee-chain-sunstar-xring-chain-xring-chain-gold-black-/261128454851?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3ccc7802c3

As for sprockets i'm running the Supersprox alloy / steel combo on the rear, & just a top line Rental steel on the front - all seems good.

Cheers.

So are you saying just buy the lift instead? I feel like the lift won't be as stable.

Depending on what YOU plan to do over the course of time, you might want both.

If you think you'll never need to remove front wheel then get the swing arm stand.

I've used just a swing arm stand for years. When I did need to remove front wheel I used a ceiling joist and some tie down straps to "hang" the front end by the handle bars.

Some people use a home-made center "platform" like a heavy-duty plastic milk crate.

There's always a way to improvise.

Check out your options, review what you think you'll most likely need or not need, and then make an educated purchase.

I can't tell you what to get or what not to get. Very happy

JUST TELL ME DAMMIT! Very happy I'll get the lift for now.

What do you guys think of this chain? Elsewhere on the forum they said it was good.
