Help electrical …..

I followed somebody here directions and tapped into a blue wire from one of the two unused connectors behind the headlight.  I then grounded it to the bolt that holds the headlight housing.  I turned the key on and it worked just fine  … then I head a pop and everything went out.  Guage cluster is out and the bikes electrical cycles when the key is on but nothing works when I try n start.

What to check and the big question is where.  I assume (fingers crossed) is is a fuse.

So I checked the fuses under the lt side fairing and found a 10A fuse blown. The box on the voltmeter Max Operating Current - 15mA. Hmmmmm help.

Could I just tap into the headlight wire without problems. I do not really want to run a wire all the way back. How about tapping into a wire at the fuse box??

The blown fuse was labeled "signal". I don't see how a 15mA max voltmeter blue a 10A fuse

Did you actually meassure the output of the wires which you tapped in to, prior to installing the voltmeter?

I'd be wiring the ground wire for your volt meter to the battery ground not hooking the ground to the headlight housing bolt, that's not grounded to the frame worth a dam plus nothing else on the bike is grounded to the frame, its all to the battery.

If you hooked up something and it blew a fuse, the solution is not to use a bigger fuse or go unfused. You need to figure out what happened. Your device was supposed to draw 15mA and it drew >10A, so there's a problem with the equipment or the installation. My money says either the fuse was already blown or you have a dead short somewhere.

The reason the fuse blew is because you effectively connected the item in series with the battery. The resistance of that volt meter was insufficient allowing more current than the fuse could handle. The Volt meter should have been connected in parallel with any circuit you wished to monitor, eg the ignition circuit.
