PostSubject: Gearing 13/?? with D606?   Gearing 13/?? with D606? EmptyTue Feb 09, 2010 4:33 pm

I'm about to order the dirt wheels for my X so I need to figure out what sized rear sprocket and chain length to get.

I want to keep a 13 tooth sprocket on the front. I'm setting up the bike to the TAT this summer. I'll running D606s or something similar which I understand are significantly taller than the stock trailwings. What sized rear sprocket and chain should I get ?

Thanks,
Hugh

i haven't done it yet personally, but
from what i can tell, you need to go up 3 teeth in the rear to compensate for the taller tire. seems like a lot of people go +4 to 47.

i'm going to wait until i actually put the taller tire on to see. 1st gear already seems pretty short, and 6th is really tall.

i also opened it up so it can breathe a little better, waiting to get a road test to see if the increased power can pull the stock tall gearing better.

depends on what you want to do with it? single track or touring?

Ok..stock the R² comes with a 13/43. If you want to keep the front a 13 and go bigger on the rear, you'll have to go to a bigger chain. If you have the rear a 43, and go to a 12 up front, you won't have to change the chain (you can use the 520/108) I'm running a 12/43, full D606's and I can use all 6 gears. I found the 13/43 was a bit long legged for doing bush runs...so really, it's all a matter of cost. Front sprocket's way cheaper than getting a bigger rear AND a chain. What's nice about the 12/43 606 combo is that the reduction in gearing and height of the tire keeps your speedo pretty close to stock.

A lot of the R² tribe are going with either 13/46 or 13/47 with a 110 link chain. YMMV.

I went 13/46 with D606's. I feel it's a good ratio for street and trail. Had to buy a 110 link chain to make it work. Got the new chain and rear sprocket from the Sprocket Center for around $140.00 landed.

Thanks for the responses.

AKoffroader, how long do you think that sprocket and chain will last you?

I'm looking for long lasting more than weight savings since it needs to last a minimum of 5000 miles and hopefully twice that.

Thanks,
Hugh

If you want a chain for longevity, stick with the o-ring. I'm still on my stock chain and over 5000 miles, and it's still stiff, no sideways slop at all. Sprockets are still perfect.
