Request Research help close RECALL Subject : Stator Coil Insulation May Become Damaged Report Receipt Date: JUN 29, 2015 NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V410000 Component(s): ELECTRICAL SYSTEM Potential Number of Units Affected: 12,721 All Products Associated with this Recall close Vehicle MakeModelModel Year(s) YAMAHAWR250R2008-2015YAMAHAWR250X2008-2011 Details close 3 Associated Documents expand Manufacturer: Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA SUMMARY: Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA (Yamaha) is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 WR250X motorcycles manufactured June 1, 2008, to June 1, 2011 and 2008-2015 WR250R motorcycles manufactured June 1, 2008, to June 1, 2015. In the affected motorcycles, the insulation on the stator coil, a component of the alternator, may become damaged and short circuit to due insufficient heat resistance. CONSEQUENCE: If the stator coil is not insulated, the motorcyle will not charge and the battery will go dead, causing the engine to stall which increases the risk of a crash. REMEDY: Yamaha will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stator coil with one that has sufficient heat resistance, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in July 2015. Owners may contact Yamaha customer service at 1-800-962-7926. NOTES: Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

No, I am the second owner of my bike and I went to my local shop and when they entered my VIN number, they saw my bike was affected. If you are expecting a letter in the mail, you do need to be a registered original owner....Obviously. P.S. Not to be the forum police, but it might be good if you tried doing a little search before posting. We already have a few threads on the subject. Here's the main thread : https://wr250rforum.forumotion.com/t11755-intent-to-recall-overheating-stator

OTOH, It just appeared on today's Google News and Yamaha begins the recall late July... seemed important enuf to post and maybe alert a few more people before it fails in the field.

| Okay there have been some developments since i was last on lol. I have never dealt with a recall before, and would love parts that aren't gonna blow up.
lol I agree with jens on the "main thread" looks like the original stator was too neat and our oil is burning through the thin amount of what ever insulates the copper windings.

| Dealer called yesterday and said they have the kits, took it in this AM had it back in an hour, painless. They changed the oil but not filter | |

| Does anyone know if a mere mortal could do the install? It's a 150 mile drive to get a dealer from here... | |

Heres some pictures.
Bike on its side, and all the tools:
Old stator, looks pretty fine:
Flywheel:
Old vs new, the new looks brighter in color:
Old stator, looks slightly burn on the single wires around the egdes:
New stator, looks kinda poorly made with the excess epoxy:
One of the sidecover bolts have a copperwasher, dont know why:
It took less than an hour, 4 bolts for the skidplate, 3 bolts for the casesaver, 2 bolts for the black piece of plastic in front of the catch tank. Then the sidecover, and 5 bolts for the stator and pickup. I was able to unplug the connectors, without removing seat, sidepanel and gastank.
Turned the bike on, and saw 14,45v at idle, good to go. (Sorry, didnt meassure it before, but never had problems)
The kit from Yamaha includes:
Stator with pickup Copperwasher for the drainplug (didnt need it) New gasket New bolts for stator and pickup (remember threadlocker) Misc cableties
It didnt include a new copperwasher for the one bolt in the stator/side-cover.
The old stator looked fine, I wouldnt have giving it any though if this was pulled from another bike. Upon close inspection, the stator looked ever so slightly burnt around the egdes, and the copperstrings seems darker than the new one.
I need to bring the old stator back to the Yamaha-shop.
The bike has just over 10.000km, with a lot of enduroriding, with the fan switching on and off. Link to original thread: https://wr250rforum.forumotion.com/t11755-intent-to-recall-overheating-stator

| I got my recall work done a couple days ago. They leaned the bike to the side as well. I was out of there in an hour. Nice to have that out of the way. | |
