I've been riding my kdx220r for years mostly on the hatfield mcoy trails in West Virginia. What a good time it's been. My age is catching up to me and I'm thinking a wr250r might be in order cause I will ride the awesome trails thru the mountains and then run the smooooth paved road back to camp. Question is to you wr owners is how does a stock wr handle trails like I mentioned, If any thing I'll change gearing. One other thing, Is it worth the time and effort and money to mess with the big bore and fuel mapping and exhaust? I've seen opinions on here that go both ways about those mods. Thanks.

IMHO

The gearing change from stock is a must if you are going to be riding stuff like the Hatfield Mcoy.

Decent skid plate would be a plus as well.

Next up I would put a Seat Concepts kit on the seat unless you really like the stock seat - I have met some that do but many that don't.

After that I would look at having the suspension done. It is a bit pricey but made a wonderful change on my bike.

I have a WRR and a 2010 Beta 520RR. Most of the time the WRR gets a nod for the quick trip, especially the long ones, since there is not much planning to ride it due to the long service intervals. Since I am now getting into bicycling the Beta and WRR are rode much less to the point that I am selling the Beta.

Unless you ride a lot more paved than dirt, I'd recommend something like a Beta Xtrainer for what you described rather than the WRR especially coming off a KDX. And that's coming from someone who's loved his WRR's over the years, but for mostly dirt with just a little street back to camp, I don't think it's the ideal bike for that. There's a guy on here with both bikes, who can chime in if he sees this. Unfortunately I don't think he's anywhere geographically close to Hatfield McCoy to compare, but from his vids I can see he rids similar type trails. We'll see if he agrees.
