Anyone running this exhaust? How loud is it? Looking for a little more power, but I need to keep the stock heat shields, etc. in place.

I thought I found a place online to buy this exhaust for around $339 + shipping... but now I can't find it. Any ideas on who has the best deal on one? I'm ready to buy... Very happy

I didn't see anyone answer the part of your original question about how loud. The GYTR is crazy loud. 102db. Offroad-use only loud.

I don't think there is a spark arrestor, either, so no trail riding without getting a ticket or worse yet, starting a fire that burns a bunch of forrest and/or peoples homes. Depending on your use, the lack of spark arrestor might make a difference. If you ride only in the city, then no big deal, but country riding, even gravel roads, you really should have one.

If you are going to re-pipe, maybe look at a FMF Q4. Even those are twice as loud as the stock 88db can, but they do improve power dramatically with airbox and programmer mods. The race pipes, that are 102db or so are 2 to 4 times louder than the Q4 and the gains, at that point, are probably not much. You said you wanted to retain the heat shield. Is that because you have dirtbagz or the like? I know some have found or made heat shields that work with other pipes. Might be an option.

Umm there is NO WAY the GYTR is "Crazy Loud" Not sure where you got your 102db thing from, it is 96db to meet current AMA rules. Is that louder than stock? Yes, the stock pipe is 88db. If you see in the link I provided, I took back to back sound readings of all my pipes. They were all over 94 db when at higher RPM...even the OEM pipe And yes, the GYTR pipe has a spark arrestor, so no worries there...Plus, if noise is that big of an issue, I am pretty sure the sound reducer from Dubach racing fits and will help to quit the pipe down. Just have not gone out and bought one/got a firm answer from Dubach yet if it does or not...(They supposedly make the pipe for Yamaha)

Get the pipe and ride...no worries!

Good news that they have a spark arrestor. My db numbers came from a Yamaha dealer website, but it might have been for the WRF rather than the WRR as it only said 08' WR. I stand corrected. So if it's "only" 96 db, that is still twice as loud as the FMF Q4 which is rated at 93db for the WR250R (where stock is 88db). I guess "crazy loud" is in the ear of the beholder. If it's 96db rather than the 102db I thought, I'm willing to back off the "crazy loud" comment and reduce that to a simple "annoyingly loud", which is moving in the right direction! thumb

We've seen different folks' dyno findings on the power jump going from stock to a FMF Q4 (plus airbox mods and programmer). It is a healthy jump. It would be interesting to see dyno comparisons on the jump between an Q4 and some of the much louder exhausts (I consider twice-as-loud to be much louder. Others perception may very). I would think the percentage gains are insignificant compared to the penalty in db output.

Regarding the db output at WOT, I agree that all exhausts are much louder at that point. Some pipes are loud at only WOT where others are loud at all RPM and throttle openings. I guess I see the difference there being the rider has the option of controlling sound output with their wrist, where some exhaust are "annoy-the-neighbors" loud no matter how you ride. I followed two guys, on dual sports, with race exhaust through 5 minutes of stoplights the other day. They were 6 cars in front of me and when they would just blip the throttle when waiting for the light, all I could think of where the people in the car right behind them. They would take off at a normal pace, not horsing around, but it sounded like being at a motorcross track. They didn't have the option of being resonably quiet. Normal day to day riding, most folks aren't WOT and high RPM except for a small percentage of the time, hence the day-to-day noise output is greatly reduced when you have an exhaust that is quieter at low and mid rpm rather, even if it's louder at high rpm and WOT. When I leave for work at 6AM, I'm sure my neighbors (and every neighorhood I pass through all the way to work) appreciate that, when ridden sedately, my exhaust isn't 96db. Nice to have options. I don't like the extra attention from the police, either. They usually won't stop and ticket you just for your exhaust, but you can bet they watch you a little closer when you make more noise, if only because their attention was drawn to you more.

We'll have to agree to disagree here because, unfortunately, there are worries by buying any old exhaust and riding. Closed offroad riding areas, aggravating neighbors and others by being too loud, etc. It comes down to consideration, really. I don't want to impose or annoy other people because I don't want them to do the same to me. Loud car stereos thumping through the neighborhood annoy me at midnight. The same guy that thinks that is OK, might be annoyed by loud exhaust at 6AM. When you go for a short 3 mile ride, think of every single person that is in earshot of your exhaust. That is touching a LOT of people's lives in just a few minutes. Multiply that by how many miles you ride a year and how many bikes are on the road...you get the idea.

When it comes down to it, everyone is going to do whatever they want, but if each of us can influence our fellow riders to keep them from doing things that impact all of our riding areas and the public perception of us, we will. That doesn't matter if it's an offroad-only piped dirtbike or a straight-piped cruiser.

Excellent. Good to know some real world experience. It's tough to know what is what because the exhaust manufactures don't seem to follow the exact same criteria when measuring their cans. Short of a magazine or other independent review, that uses the same testing method and exact same db reader, one can never get a good feel on which published db ratings are real and which are wishful thinking.

That is an excellent and meaningful comparison.
I once rode without the spark arrestor. It was bloody awful loud!

After riding two strokes all my life, my WRR seems to purr like a little kitty. Anything that will add some GRRRRR to it is ok with me. But.... isn't the Q4 cheaper and the performance is pretty much the same as the GYTR???

The GYTR exhaust looks stock with the heat shield installed. This is important where I live because of the police.

tjohnson: The GYTR unit will complement your objectives.

It is marginally louder, but that is all. In fact it is much quieter than the "E" Series White Brothers that we have on both our CRFs.

It also maintains the stock look providing for the shield installation. And although some use saddlebags on pipes without shields, it does provide for an addition layer of insulation during use.

I never saw a new one less then the aforementioned $335. I'd recommend it for the above reasons without hesitation.

TXReb: You won't find maps for every configuration.

I started with a basic map and mod'd it in the performance areas relative to throttle position and RPMs.

You can take the bike, once equipped, and have it professionally tuned specifically to your bike (albeit at a cost).

There is a FI mapping section here on the forum and you can obtain and try various maps and use your judgment as to suitability.

It looks like I will need to find a dyno as soon as I get the bike the way I want it.

You are way off on this pipe being that loud. Personally I think loud sucks big time and I like this pipe a lot. Yes it's a little louder than stock but no way close to what your describing. Obviously you don't own one. Yes it does have a spark arrester. Get your facts more correct if you're going to make comments on equipment you don't own please.

That.... ...or if you get it the way you want it, you may not feel you need it.

My butt dyno certainly isn't perfect, but I like to dabble with the settings and self-determine the impact in the areas where I'd like to see better throttle response, change the settings and go ride-test them.

There are several people who have both dyno'd and/or developed their own from existing and what would be interesting is to obtain those maps and use the 'Compare' function (built into the PCIII Software) to examine the differences and then try to understand what on the bikes configuration may have influenced those differences (be it the exhaust pipe, header etc.).

I would suspect that some of the differences may also be related to riding area/style. IOW: Mapping for optimum response in the CA desert (1/2 - Full) may be somewhat difference than woods/trail (1/4 - 3/4) riding, and even different again for a SuMo ("On/"Off") variant/track application.

That's my suspicion anyways... Again, I'm no expert.

Edit: Here is the location of some of the latest PC mapping discussion thread. You can see I still have questions as well.

I have just fitted a GYTR slip on muffler to my bike and found it doesn't have a spark arrestor. This muffler is the Australian version (part No. GYT-32D93-AU-AL) with the O2 sensor.

I have been trying to get my hands on a spark arrestor with no luck. The only one I can find is on the DRD Dubach web site, but they wont reply to my queries ... GYTR exhaust 490865

So, I tried going through their "check out store" to find that they wanted $80 delivery for a $10 part!!!!!!

Does any one out there know where I might be able to get a spark arrestor to fit a GYTR muffler without paying through the nose.

P.S. I'm in Melbourne, Australia

Simmo: Since the internal marking won't change, have you considered making a compliant arrestor yourself ?

You can find 0.023 screen (I may be off in the nominal dimension wire used in screens) most anywhere, and then it's as simple as forming it in 'cone' fashion and literally cramming it in the end of the muffler.

I am forced to get creative myself as my White Bros pipe on my Honda has a blown out screen from some BLM yahoo violating my muffler with a coat hanger. The next yahoo ranger will get a stern warning and I WILL prevent them from sticking anything in my pipe.

I learned this lesson in prison and forgot about vulnerability when I got out. GYTR exhaust 851577
